A: Yes, we do indeed have a free version of our accounting software available here:

It's great for keeping on top of your business finances, although certain elements such as accounting reports and balances are only available as part of our Pro and Premium services.

I’m a bit disappointed with this answer.
I have used both Wave and Bokio and both allow me to get accounting reports as part of their free package. This has been invaluable when preparing my tax return. I am planning to move to Crunch in the new financial year, and was attracted partly by the claim that it offers the same service as Wave (which I really liked). I had understood that with Crunch Free, payment is required to access the facility to submit tax returns, not simply to extract my financial information in order to then complete my tax for myself. Have I misunderstood this?

Assuming you’re intending to file your Self Assessment or VAT yourself, you’re able to extract this information as Excel records via Data Export anytime (without cost!)

We’ve got a Help article on this that you might find useful.

The paid add ons you’ve alluded to is if you’d like Crunch to provide preparation and filing returns for you.
