Company expenses

Hi,
I often travel to other countries for Digital Nomads summits, meet a client or collect material for articles for my blog, which is one of my sources of income (affiliate income).
Is there any expense I could deduce as a sole trader?

Hi Giorgio,

If you’re travelling solely for business purposes, there are definitely some expenses that you’ll be able to claim.

Some common expenses could include:

Transport costs (trains, taxis, flights)
Hotel
Subsistence (not related to entertaining)
Event tickets for business conferences

Please be aware, if your trip also includes a personal element, for example, if you decide to stay for a few extra days after your conference for a holiday, this will impact your ability to claim expenses as they’re no longer seen as solely for the use of the business.

Hi Katie,

Thank you so much for the answer. As I don’t really need to return to the UK for my job, I often stop in the country I travel to until I need to move to another country to meet a client.

How would that be considered in terms of work expenses? Would it be possible to deduce just the flight ticket and a few days of the hotel? I tried to read on the link you sent me but I didn’t quite understand.

Hi Giorgio,

If you’re travelling a lot as a digital nomad then the lines are a bit more blurry as to what is and isn’t allowed by HMRC.
