Got made redundant, P45 only seems to have the income from this calendar year.

More questions from me I’m afraid - I’m filling out my self assessment and when it comes to PAYE salary, I was just going to grab the values from my P45, I assumed this would cover the earnings from the previous tax year (as per the P60) but it looks like it’s only covered this calendar year…what do I need to do in order to resolve this? And is the figure I put in here gross, or net?

Hi Adrian,

A P45 would usually cover your earnings for the tax year up to the point you leave that employment. Are you saying yours only covers from Jan ’23 to your leaving date, so you’re missing details from April ’22 to Jan ’23?

If so, you could try speaking to your previous employer to question this and see if they can supply more detail.

You could also try setting up a personal HMRC login (if you don’t already have one) and see if you have access to your PAYE record there. Alternatively, you could speak to HMRC directly to ask for a ‘statement of earnings’.

If you’re filling out our Self Assessment questionnaire, please supply the Gross. We’ll also ask you to attach your documents if possible.

I’ve now been able to obtain my P60, so that’s got me covered for the previous tax year in full (my last working day was the last day of the tax year so that’s actually made things easier).

I did also get a redundancy payout…that one is a tad confusing as to what to include in the figure as the payout is made up of:

Settlement payment
Holiday in Lieu
Bonus payment
Notice period in Lieu

Do I just sum all of that up? Or is the bonus excluded because it’s already taxed?

Just had a quick chat with one of our Accountants for you, who advised the following:

Settlement payment
Holiday in Lieu
Bonus payment
Notice period in Lieu

Sum all of that up and add the total to the “Other Income” section of the Questionnaire.

Please ensure you upload all supporting document(s) providing a full breakdown, as some will taxable and others not - we need to know the full picture so can advise accordingly and ensure accuracy.
